The light coverage area for Solatube 160 DS (10 in/250 mm Daylighting System) is approximately 200 square feet (19 sq meter), for a Solatube 290 DS (14 in/350 mm Daylighting System) it is approximately 300 square feet (28 sq meter). The Solatube SolaMaster Series 750 DS and 330 DS (21 in/530 mm Daylighting System) illuminates areas up to approximately 500 square feet (46 sq meter). The Solatube Daylighting System is designed to be a sealed unit. All assemblies (dome, flashing, tubing, diffuser) have seals to stop bug and dirt infiltration. The maintenance free design and shape of the dome and flashing eliminates debris build-up. Unlike traditional skylights, there is no open drywall shaft that requires cleaning and re-painting.
Condensation in buildings is mainly a winter problem particularly where warm, moist air is generated in areas of occupancy and then penetrates to the colder parts of the building. This can result from a number of things in both residential and commercial buildings including cooking, bathing, washing dishes and/or clothes, heating, humidifying, etc. Condensation may be more acute in buildings with inadequate ventilation.
In relation to Solatube Daylighting Systems, the condensation occurs when warm moist air enters into the tubing. Most likely, if there is condensation occurring in the Solatube Daylighting System, there is probably condensation around other parts of the building such as on windows, doors and skylights.
Because there are so many variable factors that may contribute to condensation in a home, Solatube International, like most window and skylight companies, does not cover condensation under the manufacturer’s warranty.
Recognizing that condensation cannot be eliminated, Solatube International has made design changes to its Daylighting Systems over the years to help address this subject. Your local Solatube specialty dealer is best suited to determine if these improvements or other modifications will help minimize condensation in your Solatube Daylighting System. Please be aware that because condensation is not covered under warranty, there may be a charge for the service call and/or additional parts. Your Solatube specialty dealer may suggest adding additional components that have been developed to minimize condensation such as a Dome Upgrade Kit, Flashing Insulator, Climate Control Lens or Severe Climate Glazing.
We offer a suite of Effect Lenses to adjust the light to soften or warm the light color. For those who prefer less light, we offer the Softening Effect Lens that creates a subtle, softer natural lighting effect. The optional Solatube Daylight Dimmer can also be installed to allow control of the light output.
The Warm/Warm Softening Effect Lens enhances natural daylight by warming the light creating a color comparable to incandescent bulbs. Never use standard window tinting or any flammable material to block the incoming light. This is an extreme fire hazard.
For the SolaMaster Series we offer a secondary diffuser that fits under the dome to soften the light if necessary.

There are a few factors to consider when determining if a Solatube Daylighting System will have an effect on plant growth in conjunction with the above information. The first factor would be how much UV, if any, the particular plant will need for proper growth. Second, the size of the product you are using may impact how much light the plant will be able to obtain. It is also important to point out that the Solatube Daylighting System removes a majority of the infrared wavelengths, which only provide heat to the plants. This substantially reduces any heat related stress problems that may occur with indoor plants.
Typically plant growth occurs between 400 and 1000 nanometers. Based on this data, it would be safe to say that in general a Solatube Daylighting System will have a positive effect on plant growth depending on that particular plants UV requirements.
With the infrared blocking capabilities of the Spectralight Infinity tubing, removing greater than 50% of the heat from the infrared wavelengths (>900 nanometer's) of the sun with every reflection on the tube surface, the Solar Heat Gain of Solatube products is greatly reduced, which in turn will reduce the air conditioning load requirement for the space being daylit. These technologies allow Solatube Daylighting Systems to provide the highest light output performance with minimal thermal impact.

Concerning Vitamin D it is synthesized in the skin when UV rays react with a compound within skin between the 270-300 nanometers wavelengths, with peak synthesis between 295-297 nanometers. Based on this information the Solatube Daylighting Systems do not transfer the required UV for Vitamin D synthesis as it will block all of the UVB and UVC rays, which fall between the 100-315 nanometer range.

Yes, if there is a closet or place for the tubes to run from the roof through the house to the first floor or to the basement. A Solatube 290 DS is recommended due to the long distance from the roof. Usually a chase is built around the tubing for added protection.
No. It is not possible to connect 2 diffusers to one dome. In order to gain the maximum light possible to your room, Solatube International uses a 1-to-1 product design matching the dome to the diffuser. There is no "Y" adapter available for Solatube Daylighting System.
The Solatube Daylighting System captures light through a dome on the roof and channels it down through our internal reflective system. This tubing is far more efficient than a traditional drywall skylight shaft, which can lose over half of the potential light. The tubing will fit between rafters and will install easily with no structural modification. At the ceiling level, a diffuser that resembles a recessed light fixture spreads the light evenly throughout the room.

Traditional skylights have a reputation of leaking. Many times this is an issue of incorrect installation, but their square design invites problems. First, the flat up-slope side collects branches, leaves and other debris, which interferes with proper drainage. Yes, more than two systems can be installed in one large space. However, prior to installation, please keep in mind the following information:
The reflection of light is extremely predictable. When light strikes a surface, it is either absorbed or reflected. Total reflectance indicates the percentage of light that is reflected, regardless of the direction it travels after leaving the surface. A surface’s total reflectance can consist of both specular and diffuse components. To illustrate this, imagine a ray of light as a tight bundle of smaller, individual rays, all traveling parallel to each other. In accordance with the Law of Reflection, rays that strike a smooth surface will reflect and remain in a concentrated bundle. This is called specular reflection and represents a “mirror-like” reflection of light. On the other hand, rays that strike a rough, or diffuse, surface will reflect and scatter in many directions through diffuse reflection.
While a diffuse surface can have a high total reflectance, the reflected light is scattered, which prevents it from being transmitted in a consistent and tightly-controlled fashion. For Tubular Daylighting Devices (TDDs), a high specular reflectance is imperative so that light can be efficiently transferred through the system. A tubing system with a diffuse reflectance component should be avoided since that would result in light being scattered and lost back out through the top of the system.
The Spectralight® Infinity Tubing used in Solatube® Daylighting Systems is the most reflective material used in TDDs. With an extremely high specular reflectance of up to 99.7%* over the visible portion (ranging between 380-760 nanometers (nm)) of the electromagnet spectrum, it ensures that very little light is lost as it travels through the optical tubing system.
Achieving a high specular reflectance is critical since even small differences in reflectance values can significantly impact light output. That’s because every time a ray of light is reflected, some amount of that light is either scattered or lost through absorption. The difference of just a few percentage points in specular reflectivity makes a huge difference in overall performance.
Contrary to total reflectance, specular reflectance is a key factor in determining an optical tube’s efficiency in transferring light, and manufacturers should provide specular reflectance data to document the true efficiency of their TDD systems.
The ability of a typical daylighting fenestration product, like a Tubular Daylighting Device, to capture low-angled winter light may differ significantly from its ability to capture high-angled summer light. The ratio of summer to winter light output can be an indicator of the product’s effectiveness in delivering (or not delivering) consistent light throughout the course of a year. Ideally, a daylighting product will produce uniform levels of output regardless of season (or climatic conditions), resulting in steady and reliable interior illumination despite variations in exterior conditions or seasonal changes in the daylighting resource.
Light Transfer Efficiency (LTE) measures how effectively and consistently daylight is transferred through a TDD’s optical tubing system and into a room for all daylight hours of the year. This factor is closely linked with the specular reflectance associated with a system’s tubing material. The higher the specular reflectance, the more efficient and consistent the transportation of light is. A high LTE typifies a product that limits light loss and, therefore, delivers an even and dependable amount of light to an interior, regardless of season or weather condition.
Color temperature Maintenance (CTM) is a measure of how well a system can deliver reflected light without a color shift. The specific measured L*a*b color model performance parameters associated with a reflective surface are used to determine the spectral consistency of light as it is transferred through a tubular system. A high CTM denotes a product that produces minimal color / spectral shift of the light, which makes it a highly desirable light source for interior illumination.

There is no minimum distance! Applications without an attic space, vaulted ceilings or open beam ceilings are quite common. In very short spaces the tubing may need to be modified to fit the space. This can be done easily by cutting the tubing to the desired length. Note that is recommended to have a straight tube run when installing into small spaces.
Yes. There are, however, a few things to be aware of in these types of applications. Because of the excess moisture in the shower you may experience condensation, which is not covered under the warranty as it is a natural occurrence. You will want to make sure there is proper ventilation and it would be recommended to utilize the Natural Effect Lens for Climate Control to minimize the air exchange between the shower and inside of the tubing as much as possible.

Installation of a Solatube Daylighting System is very easy. An experienced contractor or handyman can do it in a few hours.
The Solatube Daylighting System is designed with a patented fastening and telescoping tube system that virtually eliminates the need to enter the attic. Additionally, many components are pre-assembled at the factory for minimum assembly time.
The tubing system is not designed for exposed exterior applications. For internal applications the standard angle adapters provide a 30 degree maximum angle. A 90-degree angle adaptor is also available that will produce minimal light loss.
Finding the cause is the first step for addressing condensation. Once the cause has been addressed then there are a number of steps that can be taken to reduce the potential for condensation. Listed below are just a few steps that can be done to help minimize the occurrence of condensation.

A Solatube Daylighting System works well on the north side of a house. However, it does work best when it is exposed to direct sunlight. Therefore it performs better where it receives as much direct South facing sunlight as possible. The reverse of North and South is true for the southern hemisphere. A turret extension can also be added to raise the dome height so it catches more direct sunlight.
Both the Solatube 160 DS (10 in/250 mm Daylighting System) and 290 DS (14 in/350 10" (250mm) fit easily between roof rafters with no structural changes, so there is no need to build a skylight shaft. Our adjustable tubing design includes two Spectralight® Infinity angle adaptors that allow installation around attic obstructions and Spectralight® Infinity extension tubing in 16" (400mm) and 24" (600mm) segments. All are designed to telescope together for easy installation with no cutting necessary.
It takes approximately two hours or less on shingle asphalt roofs, while other roof types may take slightly longer. The Solatube Daylighting System feature factory assembled parts for faster, easier, more professional looking installations.
Generally, after the new roof is in place. However, the Solatube Daylighting System can easily be installed in most cases at the same time the roof is going on.
When installing a Solatube Daylighting System on a tile roof, installation is usually done after the roof is completed. On hot mop applications installation can be done during or after.
All flashings can be modified by adding a turret extension. The turret extension raises the turret of the flashing so the dome will clear thicker roofing materials or roof obstructions, such as multiple roofing layers, HVAC units or extra thick shingles. Turret extensions are available in 2", 4", 12", 24" & 36" and 48" heights.
The bottom tube comes pre assembled from the factory with integrated fastening clamps. Once the bottom is inserted into the ceiling opening the tubing telescopes into the top tube. The integrated fastening clamps secure the ceiling ring into the ceiling.

The Solatube components have been designed to be installed at the roof level. There are applications where the Solatube flashing is installed at the roof level and the diffuser is installed vertically on an interior wall. We do not have installation recommendations for a flashing to be set on a side wall application. Our warranty only covers roof mounted applications. All of Solatube Daylighting System tube sections are designed to telescope together for ease of installation. Tube length can be easily adjusted by simply overlapping so trimming is rarely necessary.
The Solatube Daylighting System can be installed in places where a traditional skylight would not be an option, such as rooms without direct roof access or small areas like bathrooms, closets and hallways. The units are compact in design (as small as 10 in/250 mm in diameter) and feature adjustable tubing with angle adapters that allow for installation around attic obstructions.
Solatube Daylighting Systems are designed for installation even where there is no access to the attic or no attic at all. Our unique telescoping tubing allows complete installation from the roof and inside the building.
Solatube Daylighting System kits include high quality foil tape to seal all tubing seams. This keeps bugs and dust from entering the system ensuring maintenance free installation. The tube sections are also fastened with provided self-tapping screws for further structural integrity.
If the tubes have been left in the sun or exposed to heat, the protective lining may not want to come off. In this instance the tubing would need to be replaced as the lining will have baked to the tubing, taking care to not leave the replacement tubing in the sun or exposed to heat.
For Open Ceiling configurations (Solatube 330 DS-O and 750 DS-O), the diffuser has notches that are designed to attach directly to an extension tube that is notched to match the diffusers. The top tube angle adapter, bottom tube angle adapter and the 0-90 degree angle adapters do not attached directly to an Open Ceiling diffuser as they are a slightly different diameter than the extension tubes and also are not pre-notched to accept the diffuser.
For Closed Ceiling configurations (Solatube 330 DS-C and 750 DS-C), the diffuser attaches directly to the transition box. It cannot attach directly to the top tube angle adapter, bottom tube angle adapter, the 0-90 degree angle adapter, or an extension tube.
A minimum of 12 1/2 inches between ceiling joists and a minimum of 12 inches of vertical clearance above the ceiling is required in order to use the ventilation add-on kit. It is also important to note that service access is required to the fan motor assembly junction box.
The Solatube Daylighting System offers a series of add-on kits for the Brighten Up® Series that allow the user to minimize the number of ceiling penetrations and fixtures within the living area by combining the Solatube Daylighting System with a light fixture and/or a bathroom vent fixture.
Your ceiling diffuser is quite easy to remove and clean. Please note that older Solatube Daylighting Systems (Installed before the year 2000) have twist-lock diffusers for the 10 in/250 mm & 14 in/350 mm. For these older units the diffuser twists off counter clockwise when looking up at the diffuser.
If you have a unit that was installed between 2000 & 2007, to remove the diffuser simply pry down one edge of the white trim ring using something flat such as a butter knife. Continue to work your way around the ring until you have a 1/4" (7mm) or so gap all the way around. Then simply grab onto the edges and pull straight down. The diffuser lens can be cleaned with soap and water. To re- install the diffuser position the 4 zip style ties into the 4 holes on the ceiling ring and push up until the diffuser is flush with the ceiling.
If you have a unit that was installed between 2007 & 2010, simply pull the diffuser down.
If you have a diffuser that was purchased after September 2010, you'll need to twist off the diffuser counter-clockwise.

The Solatube Daylighting System’s proprietary fan/motor is rated at 110-CFM (cubic feet per minute; 3 cubic Meters per minute) which is of a much higher performance than a standard bathroom vent that most of us have in our homes. This ensures quick and effective ventilation.

The Solar Star attic fan runs best when the solar panel is in direct sunlight. The unit will run at a reduced speed in the shade (provided the sky is bright) but if one has heavy shading for a good portion of the day an "Add-on Solar Panel" for the Solar Star is a great idea. An extra panel can be placed up to 15' (4.5m) away (possibly on the opposite side of the roof with all-day sun exposure) from the main roof unit to provide better all day performance.

There are no batteries on the Solar Star that will store energy. The Solar Star only runs when daylight is available on the solar panel.
The Solar Star attic fan by design is meant to run whenever daylight strikes the solar panel. Attics are meant to be ventilated year round, during the winter proper ventilation helps prevent condensation from forming within the attic which could cause significant heat loss from the home if the attic insulation gets wet. A cool, dry attic is the best solution for keeping the heat in the house during the winter. If your attic is properly insulated and moisture build up is not a concern but cold temperatures are a concern then consider using the optional Solar Star Thermal Switch.
The Solar Star does not have an on/off switch but the optional Solar Star Thermal Switch can be added that will turn off the Solar Star when the temperature in the attic is below 65 F (18°C) and will turn on the Solar Star when the temperature in the attic is greater than 85°F (29°C).
